Key Stage 3

Year 7

Classwork

In MFL we are embracing technology and our lessons will be taught using a range of software, which then links centrally to Google Classroom.  Students have 3 hours of language learning every 2 weeks.  The KS3 curriculum for both French and German is designed to allow pupils to master the key grammar points of a language before they embark on the GCSE course. Topic areas are built around a central grammar spiral allowing pupils to revisit grammar through different topic areas. This style of curriculum allows learners to develop literacy skills in both their own language and the target language. In Year 7, German students explore the topics of self and family, as well as looking at language learning skills during the first half term.  In Year 7, French students explore the topics of self and family, as well as language learning skills.  Transferable skills such as problem solving skills and communication skills are enhanced through co-operative learning, which will assist them in future careers that may or may not involve a foreign language.

Through their studies, pupils are encouraged to develop an understanding of different cultures and reflect on how French and German cultures compare and contrast with British culture. This is enhanced by regular trips to both France and Germany, as well as projects designed to practise the language and explore the cultures.

Homework

Homework is set every half term via the Google Classroom.  The homework is a computer game on the Blooket website.  Students are asked vocabulary questions to advance through the game.

Assessment

Students are assessed after every unit of work.  They are tested on Listening and Reading skills as well as either Speaking or Writing skills.  During each unit students will complete writing and speaking tasks which build up to a similar task at the end of unit.
